Student Radio Crashes The UniBar!

Recorded September 6, 2010

Student Radio is proud to announce, a live event as part of Radio Adelaide’s Live Music Fest:

Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire! have had a heck of a year, releasing their nationally acclaimed debut ‘Sea Priest’ and touring relentlessly alongside Sia, Dappled Cities and Band Of Skulls. Ahead of their co-headling tour with Seabellies in October, they bring their formidable live show to the UniBar.

Put simply, 20th Century Graduates are the toast of the town. Releasing their debut EP to a sold-out Jive in August and winning a $5k prize for being SA’s Heaps Goodest Band, the sweetly infectious seven-piece have made good on the promise that saw them grace the Big Day Out stage and play alongside Spoon, Cloud Control, Leader Cheetah and Miami Horror.

Son of Dad appeared on the Adelaide music scene in 2005, exhibiting their own unique display of what they interpreted as “third-wave ska”… mincing together incriminating sound grabs from interviews with members of reel big fish, and laying them over stolen dub beats. The band since encountered several lawsuits from Reel Big Fish’s label, and decided that creating music more “traditionally” fitting with the ska-reggae-punk label, would be entirely more profitable, legal, and fun.

MICRO SONG MARATHON!

Recorded April 24, 2010

THIS WEDNESDAY, 28th of April, join Walter & Seb as they try to cram as many songs as they possibly can into a one hour show!

And you can help too! By listening and/or suggesting songs we could play below.

RULES:

1. Songs must be no longer than 1 minute and 59 seconds.
2. Try and go for self contained songs, unless it’s say, “Horn Intro” by Modest Mouse. Because that is just cool.
3. Only one song from Side B of Abbey Road.
4. That is all I can think of for now. Go nuts.

So come on, sort your iTunes library by “time” and celebrate short attention spans!

With a few days to go, there’s still time to check out our some of our listeners’ suggestions and make some of your own here on Facebook.

Download: Interview with The Keepsakes

Pinch and a punch for the first HOUR of the month this week, as we rang in April with a spot of on-air identity crises from two zany consumer-minded folks who shall remain nameless. April fooled you!

We also were lucky enough to have Jon Wignall and Jeremy Lake, the rhythm section of The Keepsakes wax lyrical about their new album Crocodile Onesie, puzzling album title, cover and all:

If THAT wasn’t enough, we also played songs, man! Specifically, these ones:

Camera Obscura – Lloyd, I’m Ready To Be Heartbroken
HEALTH – We Are Water
Ride – Here and Now
Jandek – C F
Interview with The Keepsakes
The Keepsakes – Shoelaces
Andrew W.K. – Let’s Go On A Date
The Greasers – Miles & Miles & Miles
Grinderman – No Pussy Blues
Southern Belle – Ride In Style
Carsick Cars – ????? (translation: ‘Their One Employee’, maybe)
Owen Pallett – Lewis Takes Action
The National – Bloodbuzz Ohio

Tune in next week of course, for more fun and happy times. Especially since you don’t have that 9am tute for the next fortnight there’s absolutely no reason for you to miss out. Who needs sleep anyway? Not us!

To Those Of You Who Are Easily Frightened…

Recorded March 29, 2010

I blog. Belatedly. Again. For those of you who weren’t fortunate enough to be listening to us on Thursday, I nearly put my neck out headbanging to one of my favourite songs, Ness served up a particularly delightful artist profile on KAMELOT (who are, as it turns out, American, and not from somewhere in Scandinavia as I assumed), and ‘Bec’s Industrial Pick Of The Week’ became its own official segment complete with an intro.

The headbanging song in question was ‘Not Ready To Die’ by DEMON HUNTER, so it was heavier than anything we’ve played thus far. It is, I suspect, the beginning of a trend by which I slowly try to incorporate at least one song involving excessive snarling/screaming every week…balanced out, of course, by the usual melodic extravaganza that is symphonic metal, and some nice, mellow alternative.  Of course, TAROT just released a new album, and Ness and I’s propensity to love everything out of Finalnd (with the notable exception of HIM…), that might just get some airtime. Speaking of new albums, ZEROMANCER also have an album up for 2010 release entitled ‘Death of Romance’ – I’m excited, Ness is excited, ergo you should be excited as well. It will, at least, mean I might take ‘Eurotrash’ off repeat at some point this year. The aforementioned DEMON HUNTER also just released a new album entitled ‘The World Is A Thorn’ – I’ll give you my opinion when iTunes starts downloading again.

In other news, nu-metal group KORN look set to sign with Roadrunner Records (according to guitarist Munky during an online chat. Not an online chat with me, obviously. I’m not that cool). I’d have lots more interesting gossip, but my internet speed has dropped to record lows, reducing me to weakly smacking my keyboard in the hopes that sheer willpwer can make websites and blogs load. We’ll just have to make up for it during Thursday’s show. And we will. Trust me.

That’s about it, except for the usual rundown of what we played:

Cadence of Her Last Breath – Nightwish (Dark Passion Play)

Not Ready to Die – Demon Hunter (Summer of Darkness)

Descent of the Archangel – Kamelot (Epica)

Chromebitch – Zeromancer (Eurotrash)

Labyrinthine Heart – Sleeptheif feat. Jody Quine (Labyrinthine Heart)

Too Much Music, Too Little Time.

Greetings, Bec here, blogging somewhat belatedly. What can I say, Ness and I are busy people. Latin verbs to conjugate, Contracts reading to do. That sort of thing.

This week we were lucky enough to interview THE JANE AUSTEN ARGUMENT. They had a lot of very interesting things to say about their music and their recent touring activities. We aired about five minutes of a twenty five minute interview, the rest will be available soon in podcast form, including the first recording of their song ‘Bones’, which they were kind enough to let us play. When we asked them what inspires their music, Jen said something that I personally thought was beautiful and profound, but I’m going to make you listen to the podcast to find out what it was.

We had what accidentally became a testosterone-heavy, religious themed week with our music choices. The following excellent songs were played:

The Cross – Within Temptation

Bones – The Jane Austen Argument

I’m Not Jesus – Apocalyptica

Deify – Disturbed

In This Twilight – Nine Inch Nails

I had some newsworthy things planned, but unfortunately didn’t have time to say them. We figured you’d rather not hear me talking at the speed of light as I attempted to cram two weeks of music news and gossip into about 45 seconds. Nobody needs to hear that. However, I’m going to put it on here instead. Firstly, Anette Olzon of NIGHTWISH fame is pregnant, which explains quite a bit, but has caused the inevitable explosion of fan-opinion. Haters to the left. Trent Reznor has caused a great deal of excitmenet for NINE INCH NAILS fans by posting a photo of himself with a microphone, thus seemingly laying to rest theories that another instrumental album along the lines of Ghosts I-IV was in the works (excellent, we want lyrics, Trent).

In other news, GENITORTURERS and EMILIE AUMTUMN are both going to be in Australia very soon, though to my deep disappointment neither will be visiting Adelaide. Sometimes I find it hard to think of my home city as Radelaide. Usually when bands/artists don’t seem to know we exist. EMPTY, an Australian electro/industrial group, have just released their anticipated debut album ‘Surfacing’ – check them out, they’re good.

ALICE COOPER and IGGY POP are part of the cast of a new vampire movie entitled ‘Suck’ – I’m not convinced, but I am pleased by the pun potential of the title. No matter how bad it is (and I have to say, I’m having some ‘Queen of the Damned’ flashbacks), I didn’t see any sparkling in the trailer, which can only be a good thing. Oh, ant Metal Hammer posted their ‘Metal Oscars’ – go visit our Facebook group for the link. Or google ‘Metal Hammer’. However, googling doesn’t afford you with the opportunity to become a fan of our Facebook page, so I encourage you all to take the former option.

I believe that concludes today’s rambling.

Welcome!
